Virtual Junior Geologist Workshop

MineralsEd's #1 Workshop! In this 90-minute virtual workshop, students will have the chance for safe hands-on learning as they investigate the physical properties of rocks and minerals. Guided by MineralsEd Partner-Teachers, students will learn about the roles of minerals in everyday life, mineral resources in B.C, the rock cycle, and mineral identification. Students will also be able to practice making observations, predictions, and experiments - all part of the scientific process! This workshop is perfect for classes learning about Earth Science, rocks and mineral resources, and mining.

There are two programs to choose from:

  • The Rock Cycle: minerals in everyday life, mineral resources in B.C, rock properties, and the rock cycle.
  • Rocks and Minerals: minerals in everyday life, mineral resources in B.C, rock and mineral properties, and mineral identification.

Classrooms will receive a parcel from MineralsEd (via. Canada Post) including workbooks, rock and mineral sample kits, rock and mineral identification tools, and a teacher support package. By the end, your students will be Junior Geologists!

Secondary: Mining in BC

Partner-teacher Bruce Kiloh delivers this workshop for secondary students. Students will be introduced to the various stakeholders involved in deveoloping a mineral resource in preparation for a town hall discussion on a proposed fictional mine.

Yukon Dan: Gold Panning in the Classroom

Yukon Dan (Dan Moore) is a world champion gold panner who presents a one-of-a-kind gold panning workshop in classrooms for all grade levels. In this 75-minute workshop, Yukon Dan will connect gold panning with earth science, geology, natural resources, and the history of B.C. and Canada. Students will have the opportunity to try gold panning for themselves and explore Yukon Dan's private collection of gold panning equipment and rocks and minerals.

This workshop can accommodate up to 30 students and has been adapted for an outdoor setting for safe social distancing. Yukon Dan will bring two portable, gravel-lined "streams" for panning and a marvelous display of panning equipment and gold nuggets. Students will rotate through three work-stations: panning for gold, heavy mineral examination, and magnetic mineral separation.
