MineralsEd is an educational organization operating in British Columbia that is dedicated to encouraging and supporting Earth science, mineral resources, and mining education in schools.
Established in 1991 as a teacher-industry partnership program, our goals are to foster a well-informed public through school education based on accurate and balanced minerals information and to stimulate young peoples’ interest in careers in the minerals industry. MineralsEd is a non-partisan, charitable organization.
What we do:
- Deliver workshops and resources for teachers
- Conduct geoscience- and mining-relevant field trips for teachers and students
- Provide comprehensive educational programming for students and teachers at industry conferences and public outreach events
- Liaise between schools and industry for high school work experience placements
- Participate in high school career fairs
- Develop and distribute a biannual teachers’ newsletter and monthly email news updates
- Maintain an educational website (www.MineralsEd.ca)
- Connect with and engage audiences through our social media channels.
Location: The majority of work will be based out of the MineralsEd office, located at 1230-605 Robson Street in downtown Vancouver. Additionally, some duties will involve delivering programs directly in classrooms at various schools across the lower mainland. There are also occasional work-from-home options available.
Salary and Benefits: $25.00 to $32.00/hr depending on qualifications and previous experience. Wage increases are offered with experience.
Position: Partner-Teacher is a full-time contract position. The Partner-Teacher works closely with the Executive Director, Program Coordinator, and a team of Partner-Teachers to develop new materials and deliver various initiatives province-wide. During the school year, this role involves providing programs directly to support teachers and students, with occasional travel for short trips out of town. Summer months are dedicated to updating resources and materials to reflect the current curriculum, creating new resources, and planning for the upcoming school year.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate and conduct educational workshops for teachers, including establishing communications with workshop hosts, preparing and executing presentations and hands-on activities, shadowing experienced Partner-Teachers, and creating new workshops aimed at professional development
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Program Coordinator in coordinating and participating in educational programs in partnership with other organizations including AME’s Roundup, the BC Mining Month Community Fair, and others
- Work with the Executive Director and Program Coordinator to update existing educational materials, develop new teaching resources, and contribute to the production of the MineralsEd Teacher newsletter
- Provide creative ideas and content for MineralsEd’s social media platforms to enhance online presence and engagement
- Update the MineralsEd.ca website by adding curriculum-relevant resources to keep the content current and useful
- Field phone calls and emails, responding to information requests from school districts, teachers, students, and the general public with professionalism and promptness
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- A flexible and adaptive individual seeking hands-on experience in a dynamic educational organization that requires a diverse skill set on a daily basis
- Strong interest and enthusiasm for working with teachers and students in outreach education
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Excellent computer skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office word processing, database, and spreadsheet software
- Proficiency with desktop publishing software (e.g. Adobe applications: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
- Working knowledge of Mailchimp or similar email software
- Working knowledge of Eventbrite or similar event registration platform
- Working knowledge of Social Media platforms
- Education certificate (e.g. B.Ed.) and post-secondary degree, preferably one in sciences (e.g. geology, physical geography, environmental science)
- Valid BC driver’s license with confident and competent driving skills in the city, suburbs, and interior, along with a clean driving history.
- Ability to occasionally work extended hours, including weekends, and travel within BC outside of the Lower Mainland.
